A help desk for SaaS startups that doesn't charge per seat

Early SaaS support needs a few things done well: a widget, an inbox, a help center and answers that scale. Roper bundles them at $19 a month for 3 seats, with no per-seat or per-resolution fees.

The short answer

For a SaaS startup with up to 3 people answering customers, Roper Pro is $19 a month flat: chat widget, shared inbox, help center, AI answers from your articles, email channel and a feedback board. Add more people on Team at $49 a month for unlimited seats. It is hosted only, has no free plan, and does not include phone, social channels or workflow rules.

Roper is made by the team that wrote this post. Figures for other tools come from their own public pages, listed under Sources, and are list prices in US dollars that can change.

What a 3-person team pays at list price

Figures are monthly list prices in US dollars for three people answering customers, before any AI usage fees, checked 2026-10-02. Prices change, so check each vendor's page before you decide.

The five parts of Roper

  • [Live chat widget](/features/live-chat-widget). One script tag, your brand colour and greeting, and logged-in user details passed through so you never ask for an email.
  • [Shared inbox](/features/shared-inbox). Chat and email in one list with statuses, tags, internal notes and saved replies.
  • [Help center](/features/help-center). A public, searchable site your customers and the bot both read.
  • [AI answers](/features/ai-answers). The bot answers from your published articles, cites them and hands off when it cannot help.
  • [Feedback board](/features/feedback-board). Customers suggest and upvote features; you set statuses.

What is not included

  • No phone, voice, WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram channels.
  • No SLA timers or routing rules; use tags, priority and saved replies instead.
  • The AI answers questions. It does not take actions such as refunds or plan changes.
  • Support analytics are on Team, not Pro.
  • No free plan or trial. The live demo is open without signing up.

Switching from email or another tool

  1. From email only. Forward your support address to the address Roper gives your workspace (shown in Settings). Each email becomes a conversation, and your replies thread back by email. Add the widget when you are ready.
  2. From Intercom or similar. Roper does not import conversations. Start with the help center: copy your top articles across so the bot has answers, then switch the widget. See Roper vs Intercom.
  3. From a free inbox tool. If you only need an inbox, a free plan elsewhere may be enough. Move when you want a bot that answers from your own articles and a feedback board in the same plan.

When to choose something else

If you have a large support team, need SLA tracking, need voice or social channels, or want the AI to act on accounts, an enterprise suite fits better. If you have three people and a growing pile of repeat questions, flat pricing is the point.

Questions

Common questions

What is the best help desk for a SaaS startup?
It depends on team size and channels. For one to three people who want chat, email, a help center and AI answers at a predictable price, Roper Pro at $19 a month is built for that. Larger teams with SLAs or phone support should look at suites like Zendesk or Intercom.
Does Roper charge per seat?
No. Pro is $19 a month for 3 seats and Team is $49 a month for unlimited seats. There are no per-resolution AI fees.
Can Roper replace Intercom?
For a small team that mostly needs chat, an inbox, a help center and AI answers from its own articles, often yes. It does not import Intercom conversations or match its workflows and channels. See Roper vs Intercom for a side-by-side.
How does the AI avoid making things up?
It answers only from your published help articles, cites the ones it used, and every answer is checked in code before it is shown. If the articles do not cover the question it hands the chat to a person. See how to stop AI support hallucinations.
Do I need a developer to install it?
You paste one script tag before the closing body tag of your app. Passing logged-in user details is optional and takes a few lines of JavaScript.
